A Memorandum of Agreement was signed by IIT Goa with Siemens Industry Software (India) Private Limited and CoreEL Technologies (I) Private Limited on 17 th December 2020 at IIT Goa for establishment of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Industrial Automation covering (i) Product Design, (ii) Advanced Simulation, (iii) Digital Manufacturing and (iv) Robotics & Automation. The actual cost of this centre is pegged at Rs. 48 crores which will be quite unique to this region which will facilitate faculty and research scholars of IIT Goa to pursue high-end research in collaboration with Siemens to develop new technologies, products, and solutions. It will also give a boost to our ongoing ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ program which is currently underway in partnership with Goa Shipyard Limited (3 GSL)
\n\n\n\nThe Digital Twins facility of the product design package can be used to virtually validate product performance. This will provide a virtual connection that will allow us to analyze how a product would perform under various conditions and make adjustments in the virtual world to ensure that the next physical product will perform exactly as planned in the field.
\n\n\n\nAdditive manufacturing tools available in the package will facilitate to re- imagine products, and reinvent manufacturing and even rethink business models around various indigenous products.
\n\n\n\nThe Advanced Simulation package will enable engineers to understand the design and functional aspects of mechatronic systems. We will aim to solve problems involving noise, vibration, acoustics, durability, dynamics, performance, and control. A production digital twin can help validate how well a manufacturing process will work on the shop floor before producing it. By simulating the process using a digital twin and analyzing why things are happening using the digital thread, we hope to propose efficient production methodologies.
\n\n\n\nThe robotics and automation package will provide scope to optimize robotic and automated production systems using 3D robotic work cell design, and simulation.
\n\n\n\nIt is worth mentioning here that IIT Goa is involved in providing consulting services for Goa Shipyards Limited (GSL) in several arears of R&D such as Condition Monitoring of ship lift system, CFD analysis of heli-landing area on ship deck, etc. The proposed center will certainly provide an array of opportunities in realizing the R&D projects of marine industries including GSL.
\n\n\n\nProf. B.K. Mishra, Director, IIT Goa is quite hopeful that the center will cater to the local industries by providing state of the art services and building partnerships to take automation to an entire new level. IIT Goa is looking forward to partner with industries toward innovation and cocreation.
