The Institute offers facilities for work leading to Ph.D. in various research areas. IIT Goa offers  Ph.D. Programmes in wide range of areas in Engineering, Science, and Humanities and Social Sciences since the academic year 2018-19. Institute follows a semester system. An academic year (July-April) consists of two semesters namely Autumn and Spring, each approximately for 16 weeks duration. The first semester begins in the last week of July and ends by the last week of November. The second semester starts in the first week of January and ends by the last week of April. In each of the two semesters of the first year, a student is required to register for the relevant courses listed in the curriculum for the respective semester. The academic programme leading to the Ph.D. degree is broad based. It will involve a minimum course credit requirement and a research thesis.

The Institute follows a credit system. Credits are allotted to various courses depending upon the number of lectures, tutorials and laboratory hours per week. The student’s performance in a course is continuously evaluated throughout the semester and culminates in the award of a Grade on a 10- point scale. Performance in a semester is evaluated in terms of the weighted average of grade points secured in all the courses registered in that semester, which is known as Semester Performance Index (SPI). A Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) is the weighted average of the grade points obtained in all the courses registered by the student since the time of joining the Institute.

The institute offers the PhD programme in Chemistry, Physics, Computer Sciences, Electrical Sciences, Mechanical Sciences, Mathematics and Humanities and Social Sciences under Regular and Part time (External /Sponsored) category and below the are steps for admission to PhD programme in IIT Goa

Step 1: All qualified candidates, who desire to apply for PhD programme at IIT Goa, have to fill online application portal available on the website

Step 2: Shortlisted candidates will be invited via email for written exam and/or interview.

Step 3: Offer letter will be sent to provisionally selected candidates based on written exam and/or interview for their acceptance to PhD programme.

Step 4: Offer letter will be sent to waitlist candidate, if any (incase provisionally selected candidate rejects the offer of admission to PhD programme)

Step 5: Candidates can confirm their seat, only after completion of Document verification and fee payment.
