IIT Goa offers Ph.D. programs in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Computer Sciences, Electrical Sciences, Mechanical Sciences, Mathematics, and Humanities and Social Sciences under Regular, Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics & IT, PMRF Scheme, and Part-time in different categories:

Regular

A regular Ph.D. program is a full-time, residential program where students dedicate their time to research and coursework under the guidance of faculty mentors. Students are admitted to the Ph.D. program through an institute selection process under any one of the following categories;

Institute TA

Students get fellowships from the institute as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Education. The following are the highlights of the scheme;

  • Fellowship as per the guidelines prescribed by MoE.
  • Support for two National Conferences up to ₹50,000.
  • Support for International Conference up to ₹1,50,000.

TA through Project (TAP)

Students get a fellowship from the research project and partial support from the institute. Fellowships, support for attending conferences, and contingency shall be as per the terms and conditions laid down in the project.

Fellowship from external agencies

Govt./ Semi Govt. Fellowship Awards include QIP, CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, DAE, DST-INSPIRE, DBT, NBHM, etc. Fellowship and contingency as per the fellowship award.

PMRF Scheme

Students enrolled in this category get a fellowship from the Prime Minister Research Fellowship (PMRF) scheme. The PMRF scheme offers two modes of entry, which are Direct and Lateral. Students join through the lateral entry mode within the first two years, and the direct entry mode within the first semester of their joining a regular PhD program. The following are the highlights of the scheme;

  • Fellowship: ₹ 70,000/- per month (I & II year); ₹ 75,000/- per month (III year);          ₹ 80,000/- per month (IV to V year)
  • Research Grant support of ₹ 2,00,000 per year (up to Rs 10 lakhs for five years).

Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics & IT

The  Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has approved Phase II of the Visvesvaraya Ph.D. Scheme for Electronics & IT to strengthen the research ecosystem by providing financial support to the institution and researchers for taking up research in frontier areas.

Presently, Visvesvaraya Ph.D. Scheme for Electronics and IT offers Full-time Ph.D. programs, Part-time Ph.D. programs, Post-Doctoral Fellowship, and Young Faculty Research Fellowships.

Eligibility criteria for the Ph.D. program under the scheme at IIT Goa shall be the same as advertising for a regular Ph.D. admission. The following are the highlights of the full-time Ph.D. program scheme;

  • Fellowship: ₹ 38,750/- per month (I & II year); ₹ 43,750/- per month (III to V year)
  • Research Contingency Grant support of ₹ 1,20,000 / year
  • One-time support for the International Conference @Rs. 1.5 Lakh
  • One Time support for Visit to Labs abroad
  • Reimbursement of Rent (as per GoI norms)

Part-time

A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including IIT Goa staff), who pursues the Ph.D. program while continuing their duties. The institute does not provide any assistance/fellowship to such a student.

How to Apply 

Interested candidates may follow the following steps to apply for the Ph.D. program at IIT Goa;

Step 1: All qualified candidates who desire to apply for the Ph.D. program at IIT Goa have to fill online application portal available on the website

Step 2: Shortlisted candidates will be invited via email for a written exam and/or interview.

Step 3: An offer letter will be sent to provisionally selected candidates based on the written exam and/or interview for their acceptance to the Ph.D. program.

Step 4: An offer letter will be sent to the waitlist candidate, if any (in case the provisionally selected candidate rejects the offer of admission to the Ph.D. program)

Step 5: Candidates can confirm their seat only after the completion of document verification and fee payment.
