Creative Pasts: why study History?

A webinar was delivered by Prof. Lakshmi Subramanian, Visiting Professor, BITS Goa.

The speaker narrated the rise of History as a modern academic discipline, its methods and why it is important to study. History as a subject of study and research has by default accommodated debates and dissent. In fact, this is part of the historical method which evolved over many centuries most concretely during the Arts Historica movement of the seventeenth century, and developing thereafter in the wake of the Enlightenment and the positivist turn. The speaker also explored how History used as an academic discipline sometimes. The fascination with writing history and the assumption that you have the training to do so raises interesting questions.
