This course offers an introduction to the study of Language in Society. The course begins with a brief introduction to Language and Linguistics. It then progresses to introduce Sociolinguistics and Sociology of Language. Through this course, we will explore and analyse several overlapping themes and issues between language and society. It will introduce the students to the salience of language to human existence. It will cover topics like-language variation, concepts like mother tongue, speech community & standard, ethnicity, class, gender, identity, culture, language contactbi/multilingualism, Language policy, globalization, and media.
